Three ITTS Module 1 courses have taken place in Kent so it was high time that a Module 2 course should follow, and it did, at Dover on 23 August 2014.

The venue was the Cinque Ports Ringing Centre, but it was in fact an Association training event. St Mary’s, Dover, has the advantage of a teaching room adjoining the ringing gallery. Ten teachers and mentors attended, three from the Tonbridge District and seven from Canterbury District of whom two had no previous experience of ITTS.

Graham Nabb from the Harry Windsor Ringing Centre led the proceedings. During the morning’s practical session his tricky little exercises in foundation skills were a good test for course participants’ bell control. After lunch they tried for themselves the many gentle stages to employ in teaching plain hunt. In the final practical session they rang several cunning variations and touches designed to help a learner to master Bob Doubles.

Periods of activity on the ringing gallery were interspaced with slide shows and discussions about basic skills, motivating a band, and running an effective practice. At the end of the day thanks were expressed to Graham for inspiring everyone to experiment in their teaching, to the church authorities for allowing the course to take place at St Mary’s, and to Barbara for organising coffee, tea and biscuits.
