Nicholas Butcher
It is with great sadness that I learnt this afternoon of the death of Nick in his sleep last night at the age of 77.
Nick started ringing at Leigh at around the age of 12 and rejoined the Association not long after returning from serving at sea for around 10 years in the Merchant Navy. He had just completed 50 years continuous membership, during which for most of that time he was a member of the Speldhurst band where he served as Tower Captain for some years. He had rung at a good number of Association towers in the last 50 years.
Outside ringing, he joined his father Gilbert and helped in the running of Gilbert Butcher Ltd, a well known local firm of builders based in Penshurst, and took over running it when his father retired. He himself retired from the firm some years ago.
Details of the arrangements for his funeral will be posted when known.
