A bright and sunny day greeted the 40+ ringers who ventured into London on Saturday 17th May for the annual District Outing – a good job considering we were walking between towers and didn’t really want to get rained on!

During the day we rang at 6 different towers – St. Katharine Cree (6), St. Botolph, Bishopsgate (8), St. Lawrence Jewry (8), St. Vedast, Foster Lane (6), St. Mary le Bow (12) and St. Magnus the Martyr (12). It would have been 7 towers, but an unfortunate broken gudgeon at St. James Garlickhythe prevented us from ringing on the Jubilee Bells this time round.

Ringing varied throughout the day, with all abilities being catered for.  Rounds, call changes, plain hunt being rung for those less experienced among us and then Plain Bob, Grandsire, Stedman, Cambridge, Norwich, London, Yorkshire and Single Oxford catering for the method ringers in the party.  At the 12-bell towers, rounds was the main focus for everyone as we don’t, as a District, have much experience ringing on higher numbers of bells.  And a good job we did too considering this, even convincing some of those who were not so keen to have a go!

Lunch at The Paternoster pub was very enjoyable, the staff being excellent and the food just as good.  The coffee break in the afternoon was also very welcome, some of us opting for the cooler option of a milkshake rather than a hot drink though!

All in all, a good day was had by all and I’d like to thank everyone that came along and supported this event – without which it wouldn’t have been such a success.  Now, where do we go next year????
